This session will examine the impact of popular media on the academic and social development of students of color. Parents will be introduced to research and literature about 1) the impact of negative stereotypes and anti intellectual messages commonly spread in mainstream media and 2) how these messages can minimize student performance. Parents will be provided with strategies for discussing these media images with their children and learn how to expose them to positive media that can reinforce healthy behavior and academic success.
